Up for grabs is an Omega Speedmaster
Reference 2998-1
173021XX serial number. Perfectly aligned with 2998-1 subreference.
This watch has been found “in the wild” from its original owner’s grandson. Due to privacy reasons, the owner did not want to include pictures or names with the watch, but the story is that the watch spent most of its life in Long Island where the grandfather lived and spent much of his time sailing. The watch hasn’t been worn/used for at least 2 decades according to the grandson.
The watch is 99% fully original with only the winding crown have been replaced at some point. It is important to show this watch as found and presented as found. There are secondary parts, nothing has been swapped around to make it “better” than found. It didn’t come with wrong bezel and then swapped, it was found with this correct black BASE 1000 bezel, etc.
The dial is spectacular brown and correct “round O with small hashes” that is only correct for 2998-1/2. Radium plots are original, shows strong readings with Geiger counter.
Hands are correct and original and radium with straight sweep hand, leaf subdial hands, so-called “straight groove” hands that are only correct for 2998-1/2
The movement is original and correct early caliber 321. It is important to note the symmetrical bridge and straight arrow adjuster which are only correct for early versions of cal. 321. The movement runs and winds smoothly. The chronograph engages, but when you attempt to stop it, it just resets. Again, presented as found without messing with the movement.
Bezel is original and correct black BASE 1000. It is the first version of the black base 1000 bezel with “short 4” which is in line with early serial number of this watch. The condition is wonderful for its age as most of these are in terrible condition if found.
Caseback is correct and original. stamped 2998-1 inside. The outside engraving is very clear without any major tool marks.
The bracelet is correct and original Omega 7077. It also has the early version of 6 end-links with single notch for the spring bar. They are original, not reproduction. There are 2 links on the bracelet which were repaired in past underneath with minor solder. It is not visible on outside.
The crystal has scratches as expected and its correct with Omega logo in center.
