Up for grabs is a Rolex Sea-Dweller
Reference 16660 “Triple 6” transitional model.
7.3 mil serial number circa 1982 production with matte dial.
COMEX (Compagnie Maritime d’Expertses), which translates into “Expert Maritime Company”, was a famous diving company which specialized in deep underwater engineering, construction, and exploration. Rolex partnered with COMEX in the 1970s, and supplied them with Submariner and Sea-Dweller wristwatches for their underwater exploits – a collaboration that was unheard of for the brand to that point, and has yet to be done since, making the co-branded COMEX watches some of the most collectible Rolex sports watches on the market.
Reference 16660, the so-called “Triple 6”, was introduced in 1978 as a transitional model for Rolex while evolving from reference 1665 with acrylic crystal and into the ref. 16600 with 904L stainless steel. It is estimated that less than 200 ref. 16660’s were made for COMEX, and only about 50 of those had the matte dial. It is not known how many have survived.
The particular example remains in its original condition and appears to have been used as it was intended, on a wrist of a diver.
The case retains thick lugs with fully legible numbers.
The dial shows nice patina on plots and original hands. No scratches, stains, or other damage. No relume or refinish.
The caseback is seemingly unpolished with clear engravings and issue number.
Original bezel insert with tritium pearl shows signs of wear.
The bracelet is original Rolex 93160 with minor stretch from wear.
No box or papers.
