Up for grabs is a Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph with moonphase, Ref. 3970E in platinum.
The “E” designation stands for étanche (French for waterproof ) with screw-in back.
This example is a third-series 3970E with an 876,XXX serial range and comes directly from the family of the original owner. It is presented exactly as discovered, without polishing, replaced parts, or added accessories.
The 36mm platinum case remains in excellent condition with well-defined lugs and sharp hallmarks. The solid caseback is also exceptionally preserved, showing virtually no wear externally, while the interior remains free of tool marks or service inscriptions.
The opaline silver dial is original and beautifully preserved, showing no signs of cleaning, damage, or aging. The hands likewise appear untouched, with no visible tool marks or oxidation.
Powering the watch is the calibre 27-70 movement, which remains in excellent physical condition. The movement screws appear undisturbed and free of marks, suggesting the watch has likely never been opened or serviced.
The watch is fitted on its original vintage Patek Philippe strap with the original platinum buckle, both showing minimal wear. Another clue that the watch has been worn rarely.
It is accompanied by its original Patek Philippe boxes, push pin, original certificate confirming the silver dial and matching numbers, as well as manuals. The additional display caseback is unfortunately no longer present.
There is no known service history, and it is likely the watch has never been serviced. While this means servicing may be advisable depending on the next owner’s intentions, it also represents a remarkably well-preserved, fully original, and fresh-to-market example of the 3970E.
